OSKALOOSA — William Penn University Athletic Bands will host the defending Drum Corps International Open Class World Champions, the Vanguard Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps from Santa Clara, Calif., Wednesday and Thursday, July 23–24.
A junior organization to the Santa Clara Vanguard, the Vanguard Cadets are made up of some of the finest high school musicians in the country. The group will once again stay on the WPU campus and rehearse at the Stadium at Lacey Recreation Complex as they travel across the country this summer. Their full dress rehearsal, starting at approximately 9:20 p.m. on Thursday evening, will be free and open to the public. Due to construction of the press box, the corps will perform to the “visitor’s side” of the stadium. Spectators are asked to park and be seated on the east side of the field.
While in Oskaloosa, the corps is also planning a special stand-still performance prior to the Oskaloosa Municipal Band concert on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. on the city square.
The Vanguard Cadets travel approximately four weeks during the summer months across the United States and Canada performing in competitive field shows and parades while providing instruction for the novice through the experienced members in the areas of brass, percussion and color guard. Membership is primarily open to those between the ages of 15 and 19.
The Vanguard Cadets have been a DCI Open Class (formerly Division II/III) Finalist every year the Corps has appeared in DCI World Championships. The group won the DCI Division II competition in 2000 and DCI Open Class in 2008 and 2013. The Corps has also competed in the DCI Division I Quarterfinals in 1993, Semifinals in 2000 and the DCI World Class Semifinals from 2011–13. The Vanguard Cadets are the primary training group for membership in the Vanguard.
