Lumber jack fun at the Southern Iowa Fair

OSKALOOSA — The Great Lakes Timber Show put a fun twist on lumber jacking at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds Monday.

The Great Lakes Timber Show was held three different times Monday: at 12 p.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Parents and children gathered for the show. There were some lucky kids that took home a souvenir or two — a chip off the old block. The event featured several different activities that were engaging and fun — such as log rolling and ax throwing. Also, the festivities gave children an opportunity to interact with the team to demonstrate what they could do creatively with a saw.

Some kids participated in the rolling logs event, which took place toward the end of the show. The idea for running on the logs was to keep moving and avoid falling in the water. The last person standing on the log wins. Dale Bockrath, who manages the program, said that this was his first time at the Southern Iowa Fair.

“They hired me to come in and do the show,” he said.

He added that the amount of spectators depends on the day and time.

Bockrath explained the rules for the rolling logs portion of the show.

“There is no point system involved and no prizes are typically awarded. Its just a show,” he said.

He also said there is one log. On the log, there are two individuals. One individual would be on the left side of the log, while the other would be on the right side.

“You are also not allowed to cross the center line. The goal is to try and make the other person fall without pushing them off,” he said.
