Transforming junk into art

OSKALOOSA — Mason Van Donselaar can turn pieces of scrap metal into art.

He and several other Mahaska County youth entered their art into the Bucket ‘O’ Junk competition at The Southern Iowa Fair. Bucket ‘O’ Junk judging was held Monday afternoon at the 4-H Building.

Van Donselaar, who will be a sophomore at North Mahaska High School, made a semi out of scrap metal.

“I never made anything like this before,” he said before the Bucket ‘O’ Junk judging Monday afternoon.

Van Donselaar has been welding since junior high and it only took him three weeks to make his work of art.

“I learned to weld at home,” he said.

The art project was an inexpensive venture.

“It didn’t spend anything on it,” he said. Van Donselaar used North Mahaska High School’s welding equipment and used scrap metal for his art.

All Bucket ‘O’ Junk pieces will be auctioned off following the Chamber 4-H & FFA BBQ on Thursday, July 17, at approximately 6:45 p.m. in the Pavilion.
