OSKALOOSA — The Southern Iowa Fairgrounds was the place to be on the Fourth of July as people enjoyed a cookout, bounce house fun and treats before the annual fireworks Friday night.
The Fourth of July fell on a Friday this year, so the Fourth of July Committee developed some activities for people to enjoy before the fireworks. In past years, the fireworks were held after auto racing at the Southern Iowa Speedway, Fourth of July Committee member Diane Clouse said.
“It’s a great crowd,” Clouse said a little after 1 p.m. Friday. “I’m very happy.”
There were inflatable bounce houses for the kids as well as a cookout catered by Hy-Vee Food Store. There were free Snow Biz treats and kettle korn, Clouse said. Also, KBOE radio did live broadcasts from the Fairgrounds. People also could buy raffle tickets to win either an iPod AIR or an X-BOX 1, she added.
There also were giveaways for people ranging from sodas from Mahaska Bottling, Jimmy John’s sub certificates and Mi Ranchito gift certificates, Clouse said.
Clouse said the inflatable bounce houses went up at 11 a.m. and people began arriving at 11:45 a.m. Friday.
Clouse said that Musco Lighting sponsored the fireworks that began at 10 p.m.
There were many volunteers that helped with the activities. Oskaloosa High School Shooting Team members and parents manned the bounce houses.
Clouse said the Fourth of July activities have been in the works for about a year. She said it is hard to line things up sooner than a year in advance.
“For 2015, I’ve started making plans,” she said. Since the Fourth of July will fall on a Saturday in 2015, she is planning another afternoon of fun for Oskaloosa residents.
