Community shows support for Cole Nilson at bow shoot

OSKALOOSA — Cole Nilson received a lot of support from the community Saturday at a charity bow- and-arrow shoot held in his honor from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Nilson, who was injured during a Polar Plunge charity event in April that rendered him partially paralyzed.

Ross Nilson, Cole’s bother, hosted the Saturday event at his home. He explained that Cole is paralyzed from the mid-torso down. He added that his brother has been in the hospital since the incident and is undergoing extensive therapy to help him regain some mobility.

“He has regained some feeling back due to the rehabilitation that he has been doing,” Nilson said.

Nilson said that as part of his therapy, his brother has undergone upper body strengthening, and leg stretches.

“He continues to improve everyday. He sometimes has his good days and bad days,” Nilson said.

The charity bow-and-arrow shoot will be used to help the family pay for some of Cole’s medical expenses in addition to retrofitting his home so that it is more accessible for him.

He added that through fund-raising efforts, they hoped to raise at least $10,000.

“The $10,000 would go toward having his house remodeled so he can come home. Basically, they are going to redo his bathroom in order for him to be able to role in and out of the shower with his wheel chair. There will also be a need for the installation of 40-inch doors so that he can get in and out of rooms with his wheel chair,” he said.

The event was spread out over 200 acres of land. In each section, there were stationary animals that were used as the target, and the goal was to hit the animal in a certain place with the arrow. There was also a point system in place that if one were to hit the animal in a certain area, the more points that particular individual would earn. The points were tallied according to whomever had the top scores. Those score would then be entered into a raffle. In addition to the raffle and the bow-and-arrow shoot, there were also items given away during a silent auction, and food was also provided for lunch and dinner.
