Blood center honors DeBruin

LEIGHTON — The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center held a memorial blood drive Monday afternoon for long-time blood drive coordinator Harold DeBruin.

Blood center staff held the drive at the Leighton Christian Reformed Church.

“He passed away in March,” blood drive coordinator Gary Vandenberg said. “He was the blood drive coordinator for Leighton for 27 years. I took Harold’s place.”

There are three blood drives in Leighton — June, September and January, he said.

Vandenberg said it takes about 45 minutes to an hour to do all the paper work and preparations to draw a unit of blood.

“Thirty units of blood. That’s our goal,” Vandenberg said. “There are a lot of faithful donors.”

Marvin Klein, of rural Leighton, came to the blood drive to donate a unit. Klein said he has donated blood at Leighton drives for several years.

Klein said he knew DeBruin.

“We went to the same church,” he said.

Blood center staff used the Apheresis machine to draw Klein’s blood.

“It saves the lab a step,” Registered Nurse Kevin Campbell said. “We can take plasma. We can take platelets. We can take red cells.”
