Local children learn about agriculture

OSKALOOSA — The importance of agricultural education was in the spotlight at Nelson Pioneer Farm Thursday.

Children from area schools participated in the Mahaska County Farm Bureau’s “Ag in the Classroom” at the farm.

Karen Adams, of the Mahaska County Farm Bureau, said that the overall goal for the day was to help children learn about Iowa’s agriculture and to give them an appreciation for it, as well.

At eight different stations at Nelson Pioneer Farm, children had a chance to do a lot of different things related to agriculture. They had a chance to view a few different animals including dairy and cattle, pigs and goats.

“So, they’re rotating every 15 minutes to the different stations to learn about all the different aspects of Iowa agriculture,” explained Adams.

Those representing the Iowa Soybean Association were also on hand at the farm on Thursday. Teachers, Nelson Pioneer Farm volunteers and those with the Mahaska County Cattlemans Association were also there to help.

Around 275 area children learned about agriculture in a real hands-on way on Thursday, said Adams.

“Believe it or not, when I started doing this four years ago, when you would ask kids where our food came from, they would not know or they would think the grocery store,” Adams said. “So, now when I go in to the schools and I say, ‘where’s our food come from,’ they all know ‘the farm’ because we know that farmers are raising animals and growing plants for us to have food and our fibers and clothes and things.”
