Street reclassified to Level C

OSKALOOSA — The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors approved reclassifying 340th Street from a Level B to a Level C road during its meeting Monday.

Mahaska County Engineer Jerry Nusbaum said the action was initiated by Monroe County and all the landowners on the road agreed to the reclassification. According to the resolution, the stretch of roadway to be reclassified is 1.28 miles from Irvine Avenue to James Trail.

“We’re following their lead,” Nusbaum said. “Monroe County will gate the road.”

In other action, the supervisors set a public hearing for the vacation of a Level B road on Section 8 in Union Townships for Oct. 7 at 9:30 a.m.

The supervisors also received a petition from Frank Holub for dirt control on 285th Street, near Eveland Access.

Holub said the amount of traffic near Eveland Access has made dust control a major problem for people living in the area. The petition calls for county officials to either resurface the roadway with blacktop or do more dust control measures between June 1 and Nov. 1.

Board Chairman Greg Gordy asked if anyone had put down dust control materials or contacted the Sheriff’s Office about visibility issues.

Holub said he has put down dust control materials, but the volume of traffic during the past two years has created too much dust.

Supervisor Mike Vander Molen said it doesn’t help that dust control materials need rain to reactivate.
