Man dies after crash early Sunday morning


According to a minimal crash report from the Iowa State Patrol, Sammy L. Baugh, 61, of Churdan, Iowa, died after a two-vehicle accident at 1:22 a.m. Sunday at 3260 Merino Avenue.

The Iowa State Patrol minimal crash report notes that Matthew D. Kraft, 31, of Rockwell City, Iowa, driving a 1999 motorcycle, and Baugh, driving a 1996 motorcycle, were both northeast bound on Merino Avenue when Kraft lost control of his vehicle and drove onto the shoulder, coming to a stop in the northeast ditch. Baugh then lost control behind Kraft and also entered the northeast ditch, according to the Iowa State Patrol minimal crash report.

According to the minimal crash report, Baugh was transported to the Mahaska County Hospital by ambulance. The report also lists Kraft as injured, but notes “REFUSED” under the “Transported To” portion of the report.

The minimal crash report notes that the investigation into this crash is continuing. The report also states that Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Mahaska County Sheriff's Office and Monroe County Sheriff's Office, as well as Mahaska County Ambulance.
