A place to learn about family history

OSKALOOSA — This is where one can find the branches of their family tree.

Don DeBoef, of the Keo-Mah Genealogical Society, helps operate the Keo-Mah Genealogical Library, 209 A Ave. E. This library can help people discover many things about the past, including who their ancestors who lived in the area were and what their role in local history may have been.

Those delving into the past at the Keo-Mah Genealogical Library aren’t all starting from the same place on their journey into history, noted DeBoef.

“It ranges from people starting out looking for information to those that have already found a bunch of items and want to find out more about their ancestors,” explained DeBoef.

People’s motivations for searching out their family histories are varied, as well. DeBoef said sometimes people are simply interested in learning about the history of their family.

Birth, death and marriage records are the typical stepping stones on one’s journey into family history. Newspapers can also play a role in tracing family history, as well as church records. DeBoef noted that during the Civil War, some newspapers where not available and added that the state of Iowa didn’t start requiring written records until around 1880.

Cemetery records can also vital when searching out one’s family history.

The Keo-Mah Genealogical Library has a whole multitude of records for visitors to peruse. These include newspapers on microfilm, newspaper clippings and bound volume newspapers. This information can often compliment information one might find on the Internet, noted DeBoef.

The Keo-Mah Genealogical Society is a non-profit organization. Their library at 209 A Ave. E. is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
