Loebsack discusses VA issues at roundtable

OSKALOOSA — Democratic Congressman Dave Loebsack held a roundtable for veterans at the American Legion post in Oskaloosa Monday afternoon to hear veterans’ concerns.

Loebsack, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said he likes to hold roundtables in the 2nd District to learn about veterans’ issues.

Loebsack told the veterans Monday that his step son and daughter-in-law are both U.S. Marines who have been deployed to the Middle East.

“Some of these issues are personal for me,” he said. “It makes me a stronger advocate for our veterans.”

American Legion Commander Joe S. Crookham said veterans have had problems getting their medals from the government because many service records have been lost.

Loebsack told veterans to get their service records written down and to hand them to his staff members.

“We will give it our best shot,” Loebsack said. “This is really important.”

Another audience member told Loebsack about telephone problems at the Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Knoxville.

“It’s amazing what can go wrong,” Loebsack said. “In 2013 you don’t think phones are going to be a problem.”

Loebsack said there was no forethought given as to the assistance that would be given to tens of thousands of troops deployed overseas when they returned home.

However, Leobsack said the Veterans Administration was not affected by the Sequester — as a result of bi-partisan action.

Loebsack told the audience that he will be back for more roundtables and encourages all veterans who have issues to contact his office for help.
