Organizers get ready for Relay for Life

OSKALOOSA — Relay for Life officials held a Bank Night Tuesday at The Herald’s offices to get the organization’s finances squared away and to prepare teams for the Relay for Life event set to begin Saturday afternoon.

Mahaska County Relay for Life Co-chairman Wyatt Russell said Bank Night is “the main money turn-in for the teams.” Teams also get to select their campsites at the event, and if the teams have reached their fund-raising goals, they can pick up their T-shirts, he added.

Relay for Life had 27 registered teams at the beginning of Bank Night, which is a little larger number of teams than this past year. However, the number of participants — 258 — is a five-year high, Russell said.

“We’ll probably hit the 300 mark,” Russell added as some teams were set to register at Bank Night.

Relay for Life is set to step off at 2 p.m. Saturday and will last until 2 a.m. Sunday at the William Penn University PAC center.

“All are welcome,” Russell said.

During the event, teams of people will walk around the overhead track at the PAC center while team members will set up camp on the field turf below. A variety of entertainment, including live bands, will set up on the basketball court to keep the teams going.

The Relay for Life opening ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday and the luminaria will be held at 9 p.m., Russell said.

The increased numbers of Relay for Life participants this year could be attributed to the date and venue change, Russell said.

Holding the event in March instead of during the summer eliminates some event conflicts. Also, the PAC offers a climate-controlled environment, he said.

“We didn’t have to worry about Mother Nature throwing us a curve ball,” Russell said.
