Intersection conversions on the horizon

OSKALOOSA — Several intersections in Oskaloosa will soon see a change.

During the May 20 meeting of the Oskaloosa City Council, an ordinance was approved, which will convert 12 intersections from all-way stops to two-way stops. The changes in intersections south of A Avenue will be implemented May 28, while those north of A Avenue will be changed June 11.

Oskaloosa Public Works Director Akhilesh Pal said a study was started in 2012 in which a review was done of all-way stop controls in the city. Data collection on this was completed in February, noted Pal.

This data included traffic volume, speed limits, intersection geometry and visibility, which are several factors that are required by federal guidelines for an all-way stop.

Pal said intersections in the central business district were not studied because of on-street parking being close to stop signs and the “nature of the business” going on in that area.

Once the conversion to two-way stops at certain intersections takes place, motorists may have a tendency to continue to stop at familiar intersections even when it is no longer required, said Pal. However, motorists will only need to follow stop signs that remain up.

The following intersections will be changed from all-way stop control to two-way stop control on May 28:

• High Avenue West and South L Street

• South H Street and High Avenue West

• 3rd Avenue West and South M Street

• 3rd Avenue West and South H Street

• 6th Avenue West and South D Street

• 9th Avenue East and South 7th Street

• 3rd Avenue East and South 11th Street

These intersections will be changed from all-way stop control to two-way stop control on June 11:

• B Avenue West and North D Street

• North D Street and C Avenue West

• G Avenue West and North I Street

• B Avenue East and North 3rd Street

• North 9th Street and C Avenue East
