Avid golfer's club collection nears 1,000

OSKALOOSA — Jan McLeland, of Oskaloosa, will always have the right club for his golf game.

McLeland’s golf club collection nears 1,000 in numbers, many of which line the walls of his garage.

Each set of clubs is identified with signage in McLeland’s collection.

Nearly all of McLeland’s clubs are steel, the material most golf clubs changed over to after the “hickory era.” McLeland said that around about the late nineteen teens is when the conversion to steel golf clubs took place. Those clubs lining the walls of McLeland’s garage are from the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s, he said.

Around about 2003, McLeland began his golf club collection, the majority of which come from thrift and antique stores throughout Iowa. He said that while on weekend trips with his wife they’d seek out stores of this ilk for her antique shopping efforts as well as to add to his collection.

Some clubs in his collection come from Missouri and Illinois, McLeland added.

“These were very inexpensive for the most part and I really liked them,” said McLeland. “So, I just started collecting.”

Obviously, McLeland is an avid golfer. He said he golfs as long as the weather allows, even into the winter months. McLeland’s father was also a golfer. At least one of McLeland’s father’s hickory clubs still gets regular use, he said.

“So, it was a natural attraction,” said McLeland while explaining why he collects golf clubs.

There’s a lot to look for on older golf clubs.

“It might tell you the distance this club is supposed to hit,” explained McLeland. “It might tell you its patent date. So, there’s a lot of things on them.”

McLeland said there are a number of reasons why he’s done collecting golf clubs, citing a lack of space to store them, as well as the impact of the economy on his ability to seek out and obtain them.
