On Wednesday, students at the Oskaloosa Community School District participated in Food Day 2013.
According to www.foodday.org, “Food Day is a nationwide celebration and movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food.”
Kristen Bandy, a family and consumer science teacher at OHS, said this is the first year her students participated in Food Day. She noted that the purpose of schools being a part of Food Day is to bring more healthy snacks and food into schools, and to make them available easily.
In Bandy’s top-floor classroom, students sliced apples, while other students chopped vegetables in the school’s kitchen. Students at Oskaloosa Middle School also cleaned and sliced apples Wednesday, noted Bandy.
Learning about proper nutrition at an early age is important. Part of that learning process involves high school students being in the school’s kitchen. This is so they can get a better idea of the effort put forth by kitchen staff to provide them with fresh produce, said Bandy.
“We talked a little bit about the fresh produce, the fresh vegetable choices they have now that they didn’t have three to five years ago, which is a huge benefit to them,” explained Bandy, noting that portion control was also discussed.
At OHS, there are three different courses focused on food and nutrition including Foods and Nutrition 1 and 2, as well as Advanced Foods, said Bandy.
“Advanced Foods is the one class that we offer that’s more culinary arts-based,” explained Bandy. “It’s kind of an independent study class where students can, if they really think they want to own a restaurant, they can kind of learn those skills. If they really want to be sous chef, they can really learn those prep skills.
If they really think they would like to go into pastry, then they can do those skills.”
