Hammes, Hartmann selected for All-State Music Festival

OSKALOOSA — Students from Oskaloosa High School will participate in the 2012 Iowa High School Music Association’s All-State Music Festival in band and orchestra. This will be the 66th All-State Music event since 1948.

“The All-State Music Festival is the highest honor a high school musician in the state of Iowa can achieve,” IHSMA executive director Alan Greiner said.

Oskaloosa Senior High will be represented at the state music festival by one musician in the band and one alternate musician in the orchestra. All-state students constitute the upper half of the top 1 percent of all choral and instrumental musicians in the state, according to the IHSMA.

After spending eight weeks preparing their individual and group material, the band, choir and orchestra students were each given a seven-minute “blind” audition on Oct. 20.

Selected for the All-State Band from Oskaloosa High School is Adam Hammes on alto saxophone.

Oskaloosa will be represented in All-State Orchestra by Johnannes Hartmann as a violin alternate.

The students will practice Friday and perform at the All-State Music Festival Saturday at Hilton Coliseum on the Iowa State University campus, Ames. All seats for the concert are reserved. Tickets cost $18 each and can be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com (search for Iowa All-State).

The concert will be taped by Iowa Public Television and will air on Thanksgiving Day on IPTV.

Hammes is a member of the Oskaloosa High School Band. His director is Rich Waddington. Hammes also studies with Bernie Allgood.

Johannes is a member of the Oskaloosa High School Orchestra directed by Bruce McLellan.
