---- — OSKALOOSA — Oskaloosa Middle School students are getting ready to help fight heart disease with the annual Hoops for Heart event.
“We’re starting Hoops for Heart today,” said OMS physical education teacher Betsy Luck. The middle school is working with the American Heart Association for the event, she added. Luck will address every middle school PE class about the event on Thursday and Friday.
“It’s our yearly fund-raiser for the American Heart Association,” she said.
The Oskaloosa Elementary School does Jump Rope for Heart in the fall so the Oskaloosa Middle School does Hoops for Heart now, Luck said.
The middle school has a lofty goal for the fund-raiser.
“Our big push is to raise $3,000,” Luck said.
The students are being challenged to have 80 percent of them to either raise or donate $10 apiece — which would be just under $5,000.
If they reach their goal, the students will have a surprise — a group of teachers will either shave their heads or dye their hair red. Also, students can get a red T-shirt if they raise or donate $10, Luck said.
Luck also wants the students to understand why they are doing Hoops for Heart. The event is to help family members and people who have suffered a heart attack or a stroke. The money will be used to help fund research and care of patients with heart disease, she said.
Luck said that if the public wants to donate to the cause, people can call her at (641) 673-8308 ext. 1712 or email her at email@example.com.
