Contested school board race winners look forward

OSKALOOSA — Neal Hadden and Carl Drost each earned spots on the Oskaloosa School Board after Tuesday’s election.

On Wednesday morning, Hadden, who earned the District 3 Director spot, said it will be a privilege to give back to the community. Hadden said he as a good knowledge of schools and that he plans on learning how to be a school board member, just like any other.

Drost earned a Director At-Large seat on the Oskaloosa School Board in Tuesday’s election. He said he was honored that the citizens of the Oskaloosa Community School District had faith in him and that he’s looking forward to the challenge.

Educating young people in the best way they can is a priority for Drost, he said. As a school board member, Drost said he will focus on standardized test scores. Drost also noted that, should at least four board members be interested in looking into it, the code of conduct could be reviewed.

Other than choosing school board candidates, Oskaloosa voters were asked to vote on the renewal of the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy in Tuesday’s school board election.

According to unofficial election results from the Mahaska County Auditor’s Office, 594 voted “YES,” while 237 voted “NO” on this question.

The PPEL is a property tax that lasts for 10 years that the school district can use for maintenance and improvements to facilities and equipment in the school district.

The PPEL is a $0.67 per $1,0000 assessed valuation levy that would begin July 1, 2014.
