Downtown two-hour parking enforcement resumes

OSKALOOSA — Enforcement of two-hour parking in downtown Oskaloosa was slated to resume this week.

On Tuesday morning, Oskaloosa Police Chief John “Jake” McGee said this particular parking enforcement will be done routinely. He noted that this enforcement is part of Community Service Officer David Wilke responsibilities. McGee noted that Wilke started with the OPD in March, having recently finished field training.

Wilke is responsible for handling parking issues throughout Oskaloosa, not just in the central business district, said McGee.

Those found to be violating the two-hour parking ordinance could be cited with a $10 fine.

People are encouraged to use the public parking lots around the central business district if they will be parked for more than two hours.

Initially, warnings will be written for vehicles violating the two-hour downtown parking ordinance, noted McGee. If a vehicle is found to be continually violating the ordinance, then a citation will be issued, he said.

The two-hour parking limit runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., McGee added.

At Tuesday evening's regular meeting of the Oskaloosa City Council, the subject of two-hour parking enforcement was discussed toward the end of the meeting.

Councilman Doug Yates said he'd heard some concerns about the parking enforcement, which included possible instances where people may use services downtown that could take longer than two hours.

Councilman Aaron Ver Steeg said he'd heard feedback about the two-hour parking enforcement that was quite the opposite.

“I think it's a good thing,” said Ver Steeg.
