Dem. 1st District Rep. Braley stops in Oskaloosa

OSKALOOSA — Democratic 1st District Rep. Bruce Braley held a meet and greet in Oskaloosa Monday morning.

In a Herald interview just prior to speaking to those attending the event, Braley said he’s running for the Democratic nomination for the 2014 U.S. Senate election in Iowa because he loves Iowa.

“I care deeply about the future of Iowa and I know I can be a strong and effective voice for the people of Iowa based on my four terms in Congress,” said Braley. “I have fought to make sure that we are strengthening and expanding the middle class by focusing on economic policies that are going to promote that.”

Braley said he’s had an opportunity to travel around to over half of Iowa’s counties. He said the best part about that is meeting people, hearing their stories and finding out what they want in their next senator.

Braley noted that one of the biggest issues impacting Iowans today is the failure to get a farm bill passed.

“When you look at this state’s economy and understand about a third of the jobs are connected to agriculture, the inability of the leadership in the House to bring an actual farm bill to the floor, get it to the Senate and get it passed in conference committee so we can send it to the president is having an extraordinarily negative impact on our economy,” said Braley.

Ongoing concerns about the quality of education is another issue facing Iowans today, Braley said. He noted that the ability for young people to get access to an education beyond high school that will prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow is one of the big challenges he’s been hearing about from people.

One of the biggest concerns Braley said he’s been hearing about is that of Washington gridlock that is keeping people from being able to plan for the future. Braley said he’s tried to address this in Congress.
