OSKALOOSA — Love INC of Mahaska County had some sweet treats up for bid at its Feb. 15 dessert auction fund-raiser, and the crowd responded in kind with a donation total that sweetened the organization’s coffers.
“We auctioned off the desserts to raise funds,” Love INC Director Debbie Howe said. “We auctioned off 31 desserts.”
In all, the event raised more than $22,000.
“The checks are still coming in,” Howe said.
Love In the Name of Christ of Mahaska County is a non-profit organization that works with local churches to bring them together to help people in need. In addition to some financial assistance for housing, utilities, transportation and other needs, Love INC redistributes donated furniture and appliances, and arranges for long-term mentoring relationships with church volunteers to facilitate significant growth and change.
Love INC held the fund-raiser at the Oskaloosa Christian School. People had dinner and learned more about Love INC. Then, they made bids on the desserts. Howe was pleased with the public response.
“We had reservations for 235 people,” she said. “We were thrilled by the turnout.”
Also, local businesses and individuals donated the desserts, she said.
Besides raising funds, some members of the public decided to volunteer to help the organization.
There were seven people who were interested in volunteering, Howe said.
