OSKALOOSA — Kristen Getzin loves to work with children and her new job with the Mahaska County YMCA allows her to do what she loves.
Getzin began her new job as the YMCA youth coordinator Tuesday.
“Everything is still very new,” Getzin said Wednesday.
Before coming to Oskaloosa, Getzin worked for the YMCA in Indiana.
“I worked for the Flat Rock River YMCA Camp,” she said. “I was the outdoor education coordinator.”
The camp encompassed 100 acres of land and had a river running through it.
“It was a lot of fun,” Getzin said. “We could talk about so much.”
Getzin said her new job at the Mahaska County YMCA will allow her to work with the after-school program and the summer camp.
“Today is just my second day” and her job will have more duties, she added.
Getzin said her long-term plans for her job include utilizing the Bruce Sedrel YMCA Camp at Lake Keomah more.
Getzin said youth can really connect with hands-on outdoors activities.
“I love the YMCA and its mission,” she said. The YMCA’s four core values — responsibility, respect, honesty and caring — are important, she added.
“I like working with kids,” Getzin said of her new job. “It’s a great fit.”
“I’m really excited to be here,” she said. “I love the Midwest — everybody is so welcoming.”
Getzin said her hometown is Midland, Mich. She graduated from Grand Valley State University with a bachelors degree in history and anthropology in 2005. She is currently working on her master’s degree.
