Spring Sports Day a learning experience

OSKALOOSA — Spring sports activities sprung at the Penn Activities Center on Thursday morning.

Cathy Smith, a professor of education at William Penn University, and her transition education class participated in the Spring Sports Day. The class is for all students seeking their special education endorsement, she said.

Professor Bill Collman’s adaptive physical education class was also part of Thursday’s Spring Sports Day, along with special-needs students.

There was plenty for everyone to do. Spring Sports Day included 20 different activity stations such as the bean bag toss, bowling, softball and other physical activities focused on hand/eye coordination, said Smith.

Individual attention was one focus of the Spring Sports Day.

Smith said the Penn students designed the activities and adapted them to meet individual needs.

Spring Sports Day served as a good way for Penn students to get hands-on experience, said Smith. It was also good for local children participating in the activities.

“They get to be involved and they get to have some success at what they’re doing,” Smith said.
