Stream appointed county attorney

OSKALOOSA — The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors appointed Charles Stream as the new county attorney at its meeting Monday morning.

The supervisors made the appointment after Rose Anne Mefford resigned her post as county attorney in March to take the bench as a district associate judge.

Mahaska County Auditor Sue Brown said that Stream will be sworn into office at a later date.

The supervisors also discussed the regionalization of mental health case management.

Mahaska County Central Point Coordinator Julie Bak and her counterpart from Poweshiek County, Dawn Roth, met with the supervisors about combining services in the two counties.

Bak said that currently Mahaska and Poweshiek counties provide their own case management services and want to combine forces to deliver services in the upcoming fiscal year and then be ready in 2014 to jointly provide services to the two counties as well as Marion and Jasper counties.

Currently, Marion and Jasper counties use the Iowa Department of Human Services to do their case management. Under the new regionalization plan, clients in the two counties would have a choice of case management between DHS and the joint Mahaska-Poweshiek county service, Bak said.

The supervisors were cool to the idea before exploring all options.

Supervisor Michael Vander Molen said he preferred to do one transition in 2014 rather than two in two years.

Board Chairman Greg Gordy thought that doing two transitions would be more confusing.

A joint meeting between Mahaska and Poweshiek county officials is planned for May 6 on the matter and the supervisors thought that day would be a good time to have officials from all four counties gather to discuss the issue and explore all options.

In other action, the supervisors unanimously approved an updated 28E agreement with the Southeast Iowa Response Group for Haz Mat cleanup services.
