Children learn about reptiles, amphibians

OSKALOOSA —

Children learned about reptiles and amphibians during a day camp at the Iowa State University Extension office Thursday.

The Mahaska County 4-H teamed up with ISU Extension to hold a two-day camp Thursday and today. The day camp is called “Camp in a Can: Scales and Tails,” Educational Program Assistant Codi Workman said.

The supplies for the camp were sent pre-packaged. “All we have to do is deliver the program,” Workman said.

“Everything is about reptiles and amphibians, and herpetology,” said Amy Brainard of ISU Extension.

The camp was made possible by a state of Iowa Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics Initiative grants, she said.

“We applied through our STEM hub at Drake University, Brainard said. “4-H has a STEM focus, so we are trying to get some STEM activities.”

The camp was open to third- through fifth-graders, Brainard said.

About 15 children were enrolled in the camp, Workman said.

Some of the topics children learned about Thursday included reptile and amphibian skins, metamorphosis and how a snake skeleton worked, Workman said.

Friday, the children will get to see reptiles and amphibians up close as staff members from Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines will bring some animals down for them to see, Workman said.
