Aleksandr 'Sasha' Crumes to travel to Europe with People to People

Sixth-grader Aleksandr “Sasha” Crumes gets to go on a four-country European tour this summer thanks to the People to People Student Ambassador Program.

The People to People Student Ambassador Program has been providing education travel for students for more than 50 years. Student ambassadors get to make new friends, and explore countries and cultures in depth, according to a People to People press release.

“We're going to Italy, France Austria and Switzerland,” People to People Teacher/Leader Briana Bartlett said. Crumes is the only student from Oskaloosa going this summer. “Other spots are available if they (students) want to get involved, ” she added.

The trip will last 19 days, Bartlett said.

Crumes said he learned that he would be going on the trip in September.

“My dad got a letter in the mail that I got nominated,” Crumes said. “I was happy — excited. When I went to the meeting, I got even more excited.”

Crumes said he has traveled a lot in the United States and has been to Russia twice — when he was 2 and 6 years old — but has not been to any other part of Europe.

Crumes said he likes art and math more than geography, but he is really excited to be going to Europe.

“This trip will focus on art,” Bartlett said.

Crumes said he is looking forward to being on top of the Eiffel Tower. Other things Crumes said he is looking forward to are the food, new friends and monuments around Europe.

Bartlett said the trip will likely take place in June or July, a date has yet to be determined. She said the students are doing different things to raise funds for the trip.

Crumes said that he sold some hot/cold packs at the Dec. 6 crafts show at the Penn Central Mall. Crumes said he also is looking for financial sponsors to help finance his trip.
