Published October 02, 2008 02:28 pm - CHI to buy Grant, Lincoln schools By WES KAPPELMAN The Oskaloosa Herald OSKALOOSA — Work on converting Grant and Lincoln schools into senior assisted-living apartments could begin soon.
Sam Erickson, vice president of Community Housing Initiatives, told the Oskaloosa Historic Preservation Commission that CHI would purchase Grant and Lincoln schools within seven days. Work at the buildings will start with removing lead and asbestos, then proceed to converting classrooms into assisted-living apartments for seniors. At Grant, an elevator will be installed. Grant will house 10 single apartments and five doubles. Lincoln will contain 13 singles and two doubles. The plans also show an exercise room, common room and computer room in both buildings. Apartments will contain a washer and dryer and are expected to run $356 or $435 per month. One of the goals of the project is to restore and maintain the historic nature of the buildings. With Lincoln, that includes uncovering some covered window panes and woodwork. A parking lot will be added to the northside of Grant. Although that lot had caused difficulties due to the playground on the northside of Grant, Erickson said those are now resolved and the playground will stay where it is. Work on the buildings is expected to last approximately 16 months. The commission also approved a proposal to place Grant School on the National Register of Historic Places.
