Education front and center
“Given that we do have so many new administrators, it is really important that we are philosophically aligned. Not only in our approach to education but our basic beliefs and values about education. We have absolutely one of the strongest administrative teams that I’ve had the privilege of working with in a long time. They are philosophically aligned.” Oskaloosa Community School District Superintendent Dr. Carolyn McGaughey

OSKALOOSA

No Child Left Behind, enrollment numbers and fresh faces were just a few of the topics covered Saturday morning at Smokey Row Coffee house.

Oskaloosa School District Superintendent Dr. Carolyn McGaughey responded to moderator A.J. Hodgeman’s observation of a recent newspaper story indicating the district’s recent No Child Left Behind report must have been disappointing.

McGaughey response was to point out the students in the district perform above statewide averages.

“We are performing very well. We’re above state averages.” McGaughey said. “And we set goals. And there are goals and not just levels that we know will be whatever the state requirement is or whatever the No Child Left Behind requirement is.”

McGaughey called No Child Left Behind “complex” and the ratings may be based on how well the total number of students performs or on any group of students. She said they plan to address student levels next year.

“So I think my response to you is, we’re putting into our planning for next year actions that will address those student performance levels,” McGaughey said. “Not only for all students, but for the groups of students that we would report out on.”

Changes McGaughey mentioned included “reconfiguring our building level teams” and changes in curriculum.

“So it’s a multifaceted area and it’s one that certainly is very important to us,” McGaughey said.

Besides McGaughey, several new fresh faces were introduced during Communication Research Institute’s 50-minute educational forum.

STACY BANDY

Bandy, originally from Washington, Iowa, is married and has three children. He praised the hospitality he has received and said he was looking forward to the new school year.

“I think there’s a lot of good things that are going to happen,” Bandy said.
