Let city, county officials know how you feel about the regional airport

OSKALOOSA — Letter to the editor:

Our elected county and city officials are put in office to represent the people. On the proposed regional airport, whom do our officials really represent?

In September, 2003, the Mahaska County Farm Bureau at its annual meeting passed a resolution stating, “The Mahaska County Farm Bureau Board of Directors and Farm Bureau members do not support the proposed regional airport.” Two supervisors serving on the 2012 County Board of Supervisors were in attendance at this annual meeting of the Farm Bureau. Were these supervisors listening to their rural voters? On April 11th, 2013, the Mahaska County Farm Bureau Board of Directors voted to reaffirm their 2003 position.

In the November 8th Municipal Election of 2005, the voters of Oskaloosa voted 1614 (78%) to 447 (22%) to keep control of any airport owned, maintained, operated or supported with tax dollars by the Oskaloosa Airport Commission or the city of Oskaloosa; this control shall reside with the Oskaloosa Airport Commission and the city of Oskaloosa and not be shared or merged with any other entity. (I realize that the proposed regional airport is not connected to the Oskaloosa Airport Commission.) With such an overwhelming vote in 2005 to keep local control, it seems unlikely the majority of voters are now in favor of the proposed regional airport. Why weren’t Oskaloosa citizens allowed to vote again on such an important issue concerning their property tax dollars for the foreseeable future? Do we have governing against the will of the people?

Currently, The Oskaloosa News @ www.oskynews.org is asking their readers in a survey if they support the proposed regional airport; the online vote shows 61% do not support the proposed regional airport, 33% do support and 6% are unsure. I urge voters to talk to the Board of Supervisors and the Oskaloosa City Council and let their views be known. Not one acre of land has been purchased nor one yard of concrete poured; this doesn’t have to be a done deal.
