LETTER TO THE EDITOR: May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

The Oskaloosa Herald

Letter to the editor:

As avid enthusiasts of motorcycle riding, we will soon be gearing up for the new riding season. As always, we use every means possible to ensure a safe, injury free riding season. We prefer to wear helmets, gloves, and protective clothing to help minimize injury, if we should have a mishap. We use safe riding practices, which we review routinely by attending special training courses especially for motorcycle riders. We ride in groups with friends whenever possible, as we know there is safety in numbers. We enjoy the fresh air and sunshine, the fun and fellowship, and the sense of adventure we experience by riding.

We are fairly normal people with families just like yours. Our group ranges from age 18 to age 90, and we come from all walks of life. We are factory workers, teachers, engineers, nurses, salesmen, business owners, and firemen. We are sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, grandparents, and grandchildren. We make every effort to ride for fun, safety, and knowledge, because we enjoy the adventures we have on our motorcycles. But, above all, we want to ride safely, and arrive alive.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. We implore motorists everywhere to be more cognizant of the traffic around them, and start seeing motorcycles. Please look twice, three times if necessary, to ensure the roadway is safe for you to proceed. Your awareness may make a very important difference in our lives.
