Oskaloosa Christian School Principal Jason Alons received a pleasant surprise this weekend — word that his school would receive $5,000.

Hy-Vee Food Stores, through its Smiles for Education program, has awarded Oskaloosa Christian School $5,000.

“We’re really excited that we can give back to the community,” Oskaloosa Hy-Vee Store Director Dan Fuller said at an assembly at Oskaloosa Christian School Monday morning.

This is the fourth year of the program, and this is the second year in a row that an Oskaloosa school received a donation. Oskaloosa Elementary School received money this past year, Fuller said.

Each week, 10 schools in a seven-state area of the Midwest receive $5,000 from Hy-Vee. A parent simply register’s a student’s name and places the registration slip in a box.

Recently, the name of Laura Nicholson, a sixth-grader from Oskaloosa Christian School, was selected. Laura’s mother, Diane Nicholson, had registered her, Fuller said.

Fuller also added that Laura Nicholson won a laptop computer too.

Oskaloosa Christian School Principal Jason Alons said there are no plans right now on how to use the award.

“We just heard about it this weekend,” he said.

Alons said that two committees — the Finance Committee and the Building Improvement Committee — will discuss the award and think of ways to use it.

“We’re excited about that,” Alons said of the award.

No matter how it is spent, Alons said the award will help the school budget in tough economic times.
