OSKALOOSA

Service agencies have until this Friday to sign up for the first ever Oskaloosa Volunteer Matching Fair to be held at the Oskaloosa Public Library.

So far, Southeast Iowa Blood Center, Mahaska Habitat for Humanity, Mahaska County Recreation Foundation, Iowa Hospice, Oskaloosa Public Library, Child Advocacy Board, Share Iowa, Serve Our Youth, Iowa State Extension and 4-H, Birthright of Oskaloosa and Vennard College have committed to attend the fair, which will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, on the third floor of the public library.

Oskaloosa Public Library Director Suzanne Holland said there is no charge for agencies to participate and the fair is open to agencies outside Mahaska County. She said agencies interested in attending should call the library.

The idea behind the fair is to get the agencies that are looking for volunteers to set up an informational table and the people who want to volunteer in one place.

“Our role here is just too kind of facilitate the meeting of the people with time to give and the agencies that need the volunteers,” Holland said. “And so people who are interested in volunteering their services, maybe the recently retired, they can come and talk to different agencies about different volunteer opportunities in one place at one time.”

A big tent gathering for agencies and volunteers cuts down on legwork.

“People aren’t aware, I think, of the opportunities that are available in Oskaloosa for volunteering,” Holland said. “It will just be a good opportunity to find out what volunteer positions are open in the community. I’m hoping that this is going to help.”

Expect door prizes and refreshments Tuesday. And if successful, a repeat performance in 2009, Holland said.
