Marching band practices; prepares for 'Kong'

OSKALOOSA

The spirit of the legendary gorilla King Kong has somehow found his way to the Oskaloosa High School’s practice fields for the marching band’s Friday exhibition.

Director Al Paulson said the show will tell the story of Kong, from the remote island to the Empire State Building. Kong won’t be present, but Anne, the woman Kong falls in love with, along with islanders and adventurers will be played by the color guard and band members.

“This is the hardest drill I’ve written for high school,” Paulson said.

The show marks the end of daylong practices for the marching band before school begins. The drum line and color guard began meeting on Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The next day, section leaders practiced in the morning and the rest of the band joined in the afternoon, then on Aug. 6, the whole ensemble practiced together.

This is Paulson’s 12th year at Oskaloosa and his 11th year putting on band camp exhibitions.

Former students Derek Hessing and Alison Stevens watched the band practice on Wednesday.

“Marching band was my favorite part of the year,” Stevens said.

Hessing said he liked performing and being able to get people on their feet.

Paulson’s exhibitions are something Hessing remembers fondly.

“It’s a good way to end the summer,” Hessing said.

The show begins Friday, Aug. 15, at 3 p.m. behind the middle school and high school at the band’s practice field.
