HERALD EDITORIAL BOARD: What are we telling our employers?

Iowa’s the home to around 5,800 manufacturing employers. These manufacturing facilities generate over 21 percent of the gross state product, which places Iowa at about 8th nationally in terms of importance of manufacturing to the state economy. In 2001, manufacturing contributed $19.1 billion to the Iowa gross state product.

EDITORIAL BOARD: Raising the minimum wage: Where good intentions meet unintended consequences

While the intent may be good, and the cause may be noble, the result is neither. Politics has superseded basic market economics such that a “feel good” solution is provided instead of long-term solution.

HERALD EDITORIAL BOARD: Rise or stagnate, Oskaloosa

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, among others, showed a lack of vision with his comment, “Before government starts trying to figure out how to make cities and towns cool and hip (places to live), they’ve got to make them work.”

As the year draws to a close and the holiday season is upon us, we would like to recognize all of the organizations that play an important role in helping our community and its residents — especially those who are less fortunate.

EDITORIAL BOARD: Where are we going?

Oskaloosa can point to a number of things that indicate that it is a growing, prosperous community: our new and updated schools, the George Daily Auditorium, the recreation trail, our parks, the historic bandstand, a stable economy, and the expansion of major employers like Clow, Musco and Cargill. All of these things contribute to the progress of our community. But where do we want to be in the next five years. What things do we want to accomplish as a city, a county and a school district to continue this success?

EDITORIAL BOARD: Rec trail discussion must continue for benefit of community

The City Council needs to meet with the trail proponents to come to a consensus on trail uses and to coordinate the trail’s final completion. It’s not about who backs trail construction, but completion of the trail itself.
