Herald Editor Duane Nollen
/ The Oskaloosa Herald

Published April 30, 2007 02:02 pm - The Legislature has passed almost all of Democratic Gov. Chet Culver’s agenda items. The Legislature has passed items such as The Iowa Power Fund — a cornerstone of Culver’s agenda to promote alternative energy production.

COLUMN: Question of the Week: Are you satisfied with your state lawmakers?

By DUANE NOLLEN
The Oskaloosa Herald

A majority of those who answered last week’s Question of the Week: “Do you think our campuses are safe?” believe that they are.

Of the 41 people responding, 23 — 56.10 percent — said “Yes,” while 18 — 43.90 percent — answered “No.”

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week’s question deals with our state lawmakers as they wrap up the current legislative session.

The legislative session is due to end this weekend as lawmakers put the finishing touches on a $6 billion budget and complete work on pending bills.

This year is the first time in 42 years that the Democrats control both houses of the Legislature and have a Democratic governor. Locally, Democratic state Sen. Tom Rielly had a new Democratic colleague join him this year as state Rep. Eric Palmer won election to the House District 75 seat held by Republican Danny Carroll. Two Republicans — state Sen. Paul McKinley and state Rep. Richard Arnold — also represent parts of Mahaska County.

The Legislature has passed almost all of Democratic Gov. Chet Culver’s agenda items. The Legislature has passed items such as The Iowa Power Fund — a cornerstone of Culver’s agenda to promote alternative energy production. Lawmakers also passed a $250 million teacher pay package to raise Iowa teachers’ salaries to 25th in the nation. More controversially, the Legislature passed legislation to protect the civil rights of gays.

Are you satisfied with the performance of our state lawmakers? How would you rate their performance?

This week’s Question of the Week: Are you satisfied with your state lawmakers? Yes or No.

People can vote on The Herald’s Web site, oskaloosa.com, from Monday through noon on Friday. Then, votes will be tallied and published the following Monday.
