Give art a try

OSKALOOSA — This past Friday, I was once again given the opportunity to go to the Wilcox Library’s Foyer Gallery to view a local artist’s work.

In the Monday, Jan. 14, issue of the Herald, you’ll find the story I did about the art of Kimberly Stutting.

What impressed me about her work was the fact that it wasn’t exclusively tied to one medium. Stutting works with glass, ceramic, watercolor painting and mixed-medium to create her art.

While at Friday evening’s reception for Stutting in the Foyer Gallery, I had the chance to photograph many different kinds of art. For the story, photos of a pair of paintings and a piece of glass art were chosen. But, there were of course other kinds of art on display that evening, as well.

I’m no art expert, but I can tell you that I was impressed by the fact that Stutting is willing and able to be creative in more than one medium.

Some people may be satisfied by one creative outlet and that’s all well and good. But, it seems to me that having more than one has to be better, right?

I mean, if you get bored with one, you can always go to another. It doesn’t mean you have to completely abandon one creative outlet, though. You can always come back to it if you like.

Being willing to try new kinds of artistic expression is a good thing. We’re all familiar with the idea that you don’t know if you’re any good at anything unless you give it a try. The old idea of practice making perfect can also be applied here.

For example, if you want to find out if you’re any good at painting, you’ve first got to try and it wouldn’t hurt to keep at it for a while before coming to any conclusions as to your ability.

It’s also a good idea to be creative for yourself first, rather than trying to please an audience. This tends to make the creative process go better.

So, if there’s some kind of artistic expression like painting that you are interested in, I’d say give it a try. You just might find out you’ve got a knack for it.
