Alleyway maintenance in Osky

OSKALOOSA — Hot and dry weather is here to stay! For the last few weeks temperatures have steadily been in the mid to upper 90s. Little rain has fallen this month and the drought that we are in appears to be here to stay. Some relief is in the forecast with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday night and Sunday. Temperatures also are forecast to be in the upper 80s! This week, I answered a couple of questions relating to alleyways and streets.

Question: Who is responsible for maintaining alleyways?

This topic seems to come up a couple of times each year. For this question, I talked to Akhilesh Pal, our Public Works Director. For downtown alleys, the city is responsible for maintaining those. For residential alleys, a resident can request that the city fix an alley; however, the resident will be responsible for purchasing the material (such as gravel) for fixing the alley. If a resident can’t provide the material, the city will grade the alley.

Question: Will the city be repainting the turn lane lines on South D Street near Hy-Vee?

South D Street in front of Hy-Vee has a turn lane for about two blocks. Over time, these lines have become worn and have faded dramatically. Public Works Director Akhilesh Pal says that the city will be repainting these lines, but that at this time street workers are busy doing pavement repairs.
