The appropriate way to ride a bike or skateboard

OSKALOOSA — Cooler weather has arrived and it is here to stay! This past week, we saw temperatures rise all the way to the 70s, then suddenly drop down to the 30s. Welcome to Iowa! This next week looks to be relatively the same with daytime temps in the 50s and overnight temps in the 30s.

QUESTION: What is the appropriate way to ride a bike or skateboard?

I was looking through my “archives” this past week when I realized that I had not answered this question. Noticing this was rather timely as I had my own incident with something like this. I took some time to look on the Iowa DOT Web site at this. The Web site states a lot of very valuable information which I would highly encourage you to look at but there is one thing I would like to remind bikers of. It is your duty to know what the laws of the road are. You need to know them. Also, it’s important to remember that bikers should ride on the right side of the road, with the flow of traffic. There are numerous exceptions to that rule, which can be found on the DOT Web site. Finally, please remember that it important to always wear light-colored clothes and always have a flashing light or reflector on your bike.

QUESTION: What was the percentage of persons voting last week?

I did some research locally and nationwide. Initially turnout was expected to be low; however, nationwide it turned out to be 57 percent to 60 percent turnout. That would put it lower than 2004 and 2008 turnout, but still somewhat high. Countywide, according to last week’s unofficial returns, turnout was 69 percent to 70 percent. That number includes record absentee voting turnout.

Have a great and safe week!
