Contribute your photos

OSKALOOSA — Your contributions are of value to us.

This past Friday, a photo of now 7-year-old Brandon Dooley, of Oskaloosa, appeared on the front page of the Herald. In the photo, Brandon is showing the 106-pound pumpkin he grew himself. The look on his face is one of well-deserved pride.

This photo was brought into the Herald by a relative of Brandon’s who appeared proud of his accomplishment, as well.

Although I didn’t take the photo, I was happy to include it in the newspaper.

So, why do we at the Herald accept these “contributed photos”? Well, it’s quite simple really. Sometimes one of our readers sees something of interest to them, takes the initiative and snaps a shot of whatever that may be. Obviously, they want others to see what they’ve captured and they make the logical next step toward sharing that photo by letting us at the Herald use it.

I thought it was more than appropriate to run this particular photo because we’re at that point in the year some folks would call the “Halloween season.” Now, I’m not sure if Brandon’s 106-pound pumpkin has ended up a jack-o-lantern just yet. However, I’m pretty sure it would take quite a while to clean the guts out of that thing and carve a face into its side.

Getting back to the point I was trying to make — I appreciate when people bring in their interesting photos to our office or if someone simply shoots me an e-mail of an interesting shot they’ve taken.

I would encourage anyone who has an interesting photo to share to not be shy about trying to get it to run in the Herald. As long as the photo is appropriate, we usually run the majority of photos we’re submitted. In my time with the Herald, we’ve run contributed photos of everything from local people earning awards to large vegetables grown locally.

There are also times when I will run a contributed photo with a story I’ve written. Sometimes this is the only logical way to have a visual aspect to the story.

So, if you’ve got a photo of someone doing something you feel is newsworthy, don’t hesitate to bring it to my attention. Sometimes what is of interest to you may be to others, as well. I can be reached by e-mail at news2@oskyherald.com.
