It’s good to try new technology

OSKALOOSA — I don’t know about you, but I had a great couple of holidays in recent weeks.

I had a chance to see my family for Christmas and got some pretty neat presents, which you likely couldn’t care less about because they aren’t all that interesting to people other than myself. I mean, do you really care about the hard shell guitar case or DVDs I received for Christmas? I didn’t think so.

Anyway, I understand that a lot of people received the latest and greatest tablet computers for Christmas this year. These handy gadgets seem to be gaining in popularity all the time.

In the Friday, Jan. 4, issue of the Herald, you’ll find a story I did about classes being offered at the ISU Extension office here in town to help people realize the potential of these devices. It’s my understanding that the classes intended to show people the personal and professional benefits of tablets and such.

In doing the story, it’s also my understanding that it’s not just young people who are getting into using tablets and other newer technology. I understand that people in their 50s and beyond are also using these devices.

This is a great thing, if you ask me. I know that when these kinds of devices first came onto my radar, I had some learning of my own to do. Touch-screen keyboarding and browser navigation took some practice, but I got the hang of it. I’ve always been open to new kinds of technology, so I actually had fun learning about these things.

I would encourage more people to take this approach to new forms of technology. I know that these kinds of devices are updated often and it can seem challenging to some people to get on board with them at all.

But, it’s always good to take a willingness-to-learn attitude. This is the kind of thing that deserves a chance, if you ask me.
