When the storm sirens sound

OSKALOOSA — It’s typical Iowa weather again. For the past few days, we have been blessed to have temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. We also were blessed to get some much needed rainfall! Unfortunately, that rain will bring with it cooler temperatures and the possibility of a wintery mix. Thursday evening looks to bring a slight chance of rain/snow mix. Thankfully, due to warmer temperatures, little, if any, snow accumulation will occur. Temperatures over the next few days look to range from the mid to upper 40s to the mid 50s. The start of next week looks to bring with it more 60 degree temperatures! Because we are now starting to get into the time for severe weather, I would like to remind residents of the storm siren policy for Oskaloosa.

Question: What is the ordinance for the storm sirens in Oskaloosa? Do they only sound for tornadoes now?

In 2009, the Oskaloosa City Council changed the Storm Siren Ordinance in Oskaloosa. The move came after concerns were expressed that the Oskaloosa Storm Sirens were being sounded too often. According to the new policy, the sirens will only be sounded if the National Weather Service issues a Tornado Warning for Mahaska County and the storm is on a track that would affect Oskaloosa. The other option for the sirens being sounded is if a trained storm spotter indicates that a Severe Thunderstorm is producing damaging winds or hail, they may have the sirens sounded. Regardless, you should be taking cover if you hear the Oskaloosa Storm Sirens
