Everyone loves a parade

OSKALOOSA — It may seem like a distant memory to some, but this year’s Lighted Christmas Parade is still fresh in my mind. It is still technically the Christmas season and I think I can still put in my two cents about the parade.

As we all know, the weather this year was particularly forgiving during the parade. I’ve covered the Lighted Christmas Parade every year since 2009. So, I can tell you the weather was much more cooperative than it has been in the past.

I can remember past Lighted Christmas Parades when I found it perfectly logical to wear layer upon layer upon layer of clothing to stay warm. During at least one Lighted Christmas Parade, I wore a long John shirt, flannel shirt, sweatshirt, leather coat and windbreaker all at once. I’m pretty sure I was wearing at least two pairs of socks, as well.

With this year’s warmer weather, the parade lasted a bit longer than in other years. This is a great thing for a few reasons. As a photographer, it’s a bit easier to photograph a slower-moving parade. I don’t want to get into all the technical details, because that would likely be boring. However, I can tell you that taking pictures of this year’s Lighted Christmas Parade was a bit easier for me.

All the floats this year were awesome. But, like anyone else, I had my favorites. The float with the Revelation praise band was particularly cool. I really enjoyed their take on the some of the classic Christmas sounds. I’m sure it was easier to play their guitars in the relatively warm weather this year.

The weather seemed to also play a part in the number of spectators this year. From what I could tell, there were many, many more people enjoying the parade this year.

I know that folks come from out of town to see the Lighted Christmas Parade. I’m just wondering who came the farthest to see this year’s parade.

The parade is really something we as Oskaloosa residents should hang our hats upon. It was awesome to see so many smiling faces at this year’s event and I’d like to see them again.

You can still find the photos I took from this year’s Lighted Christmas Parade on the Herald’s Web site, http://www.oskaloosa.com/local/x983013729/SLIDESHOW-Lighted-Holiday-Parade.
