Valuable information for hunters

OSKALOOSA — Things seem to be back to normal, weather wise that is. Temperatures for the past week have been unbelievably cool, with many evenings having low temperatures in the 50s and many days having high temperatures in the upper 70s. This next week looks to remain cool with temperatures around 75 each day.

This week, I have been asked to print some information regarding hunting seasons.

Beginning this past week on Aug. 15, deer licenses went on sale. According to the Iowa DNR, licenses for Youth, Disabled, Archery (early split), Archery (late split), Early Muzzleloader, Late Muzzleloader, Shotgun Season 1, and Shotgun Season 2 all went on sale on Aug. 15 and will remain on sale until the end of each respective season.

The DNR also is noting some new changes to Early Muzzleloader Tag Combinations. According to a press release, “For the last 7 years hunters have been able to purchase a tag for the Early Muzzloader season and still acquire an anterless-only tag for either Gun 1 or Gun 2 season. This year hunters will be restricted to Early Muzzleloader OR one of the Gun seasons. The historic rapid sell-out of Early Muzzleloader tags (3 days in 2011) prompted the DNR to make changes to the tag combinations allowed to each hunter.”

The DNR is also noting that a decision has been made to close November anterless season while the DNR works to stabilize the deer herd statewide. The January anterless season will also be shortened y two weeks compared to previous years. To purchase tags, you can visit the Mahaska County Recorders Office in the Mahaska County Courthouse.
