What to know when the snow falls

OSKALOOSA — Winter has officially arrived! By the time you read this, there will be inches of the white stuff on the ground, the wind may be blowing, and the snow may be drifting around. The first major winter storm of the season is set to hit us. Some have been comparing this storm to the December 2009 blizzard as well as the January 1996 blizzard. While this question may be a little late, I would like to take this opportunity to continue to remind residents of our snow ordinance.

The city of Oskaloosa has a strict ordinance regarding snow emergencies. The Oskaloosa Police Department recently posted a press release on the city Web site. A portion of it reads: “When a snow emergency is declared, no on-street parking is allowed. If you leave your vehicle parked on city streets during a snow emergency, you may receive a $25 parking ticket and/or your vehicle could be towed at your expense. Citizens who do not have off-street parking available to them may park their vehicle(s) in the city parking lots within the central business district. Once the street is plowed you should remove your vehicle from the city parking lot so the street department can plow the lots. On-street parking is allowed again only after the full width of the street has been plowed, or the snow emergency has been cancelled.”

The press release goes onto say that if residents have further questions, they can pick up a brochure relating to snow ordinances at the City Hall.

Also, PLEASE REMEMBER TO SHOVEL YOUR SIDEWALKS WITHIN 24 HOURS OF THE STORM STOPPING!!! It is IMPERATIVE that you do so. The City Council has debated this in seasons past and they have determined that residents will have ample time to get your sidewalks clear in 24 hours. If you don’t do so, you are subject to having the city clearing your sidewalks for you and fining you. Please make sure you get this done!

Finally, I would like to remind everyone to have a very safe and a very Merry Christmas! Please be safe during this next holiday week.

If you have a question about anything that is occurring in the community, or about an upcoming event, please feel free to send them to me. I will do my best to find an answer for you. Please e-mail them to me at oskyquestions@gmail.com.
