National Recording Registry selects 25 entries for inclusion

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Recording Registry's tastes in 2013 run from Chubby Checker through Pink Floyd and all the way to Saturday Night Fever.

The registry seeks to preserve recordings deemed to have significant cultural impact. This year's earliest entry is "After You're Gone" by Marion Harris. It dates to 1918. Betty Carter's 1980 work, "The Audience with Betty Carter," is the most recent.

While the soundtrack to 1977's "Saturday Night Fever," and Chubby Checker's "The Twist," are well known, many of the works, like have lost the attention they once held. Will Rogers is remembered, but it's a safe bet most people haven't heard his "Bacon, Beans and Limousines."

Not all of the entries are performers, either. President Dwight Eisenhower's message relayed by a satellite in 1958 was a landmark event in communications, but it is little remembered now. George Hicks' reporting from Normandy on D-Day was recorded for later rebroadcast and changed how people got their news.

The registry's description of each entry even holds surprises about the better-known entries. The version of Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence" isn't the one they recorded. That one flopped. The version that became a classic includes instruments dubbed in by a producer without their knowledge.

Here's a list of all 25 entries for the year. For more about each one, visit the Library of Congress' website.
