'Rod floor' instills confidence, safety

Sheree Lange, owner of Sheree’s Flip Flop Tumbling in Centerville, has a new piece of equipment designed to instill confidence in her students and it brings a safety element.

It’s called a “rod floor” because it has tubular fiberglass rods under the surface that gives students a certain bounce off the surface or spring that regular mats alone do not have.

“Tumblers have less fear of trying tumbling skills and it builds their confidence,” Lange said, calling it a piece of equipment with safety features built in. “It’s safer for the kids because they have a bounce when they fall. This takes the pressure off when kids fall.”

Now, the kids have no fear of falling because the rod floor gives where mats do not, she said.

Lange said it was purchased three weeks ago from Ross Athletic Supply. She said it’s the only one she knows of in Appanoose County.

Alyssa Koestner, 8, the daughter of Courtney and Chad Koestner of Centerville, was in the studio Friday afternoon giving the rod floor a try.

Right now 17 of the 21 sections of rod floor are connected. Plans call for several more to be added on in the near future.

Each steel frame section of rod floor is eight inches in height, six feet wide, four feet long and has 16 tubular fiberglass rods.

Lange has 21 sections in all which would give her 84 feet to work with.

  • Cats outsmart the researchers

I knew a lot had been written about dogs, and I assumed there must be at least a handful of studies on cats. But after weeks of scouring the scientific world for someone - anyone - who studied how cats think, all I was left with was this statement, laughed over the phone to me by one of the world's top animal cognition experts, a Hungarian scientist named Ádám Miklósi.

Procrastinators, in my experience, like nothing better than explaining away their procrastination: General busyness, fear of failure, and simple laziness are just a handful of the excuses and theories often tossed around. Now researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder have added another option to the list: genetics.
