Humble Heroes golf fundraiser nets $25K

Humble Heroes Foundation has raised nearly $42,000 the last two years to support organizations dedicated to helping military families and to provide financial assistance to surviving children and spouses of service members killed in the line of duty.

The assistance could come in the form of college scholarships and other financial aid.

The second annual HHF fundraiser netted $25,000 this year following a golf outing at the Preserve Golf Course at Honey Creek Resort, 5K/10K fun run on Rathbun Lake North Shore trail, live concert by John Stone and a meal on Saturday, Aug. 17.

The first HHF fundraiser last year netted almost $17,000 following a golf outing at the Appanoose Country Club.

HHF is an Appanoose County creation, started by two current and one former Centerville native.

Founding members are Justin Zaputil and Gaylon Cowan, both of Centerville, Troy Roach, formerly of Centerville now living in Houston, Texas and his Houston friend, Trey Barnes.

Zaputil said HHF was started following the death of their friend, Marine Corps Master Sergeant Travis Riddick, a Centerville native, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2012 while on active duty.

HHF is a way to show military families something more than telling them, “Thank you for your service,” Zaputil said.

“His untimely death left a void in many lives and reminded us of the high price paid by far too many of our country’s military men and women,” HHF website states. “After Travis’ passing we were left with feeling of helplessness and a desire to do something of significance that would show appreciation for our military service members.”

Zaputil said they had 100 sign up to play golf, for 25 teams at a cost of $400 per team.

Charity Cowan said they had 25 sign up to do the 5K/10K fun run at $25 per runner.

Cowan said it was great to see the runners enjoying themselves and raise money to help others.
