Fundraising continues for new M-D Library

A fundraising campaign for a new Melcher-Dallas Public Library is in its third year. Nearly $78,000 has been raised and a different building to house the library has been purchased.

Librarian Lori Davis has been active in the campaign. She said she hopes to be able to provide more and better services at the library upon the move. This includes basic computer classes and an expanded summer reading program.

“Right now, I don’t have the room,” Davis said. The current library has 600 square feet. The new facility purchased by the Friends of the Library, will increase the square footage to 2,000 when it opens.

Davis has designs for the building, which needs a great deal of interior work. In the end, along with more room, she believes the new library will be more energy efficient and will ultimately save money for the City of Melcher-Dallas. A new and improved library is just one way she hopes to build the town.

“I want to see Melcher grow,” she said.

The library is a City facility, but Davis said that the City has not explored the option of financing the improvements in the library. Davis said that she does not want to see taxes increased, and is hopeful that the $300,000 project can be completed through grant writing and other fundraisers.

Reaching the $75,000 benchmark has made the project eligible for more grant opportunities. Since the new library building will need renovation, she said the library is applying for a Department of Natural Resources rehabilitation grant.

Fundraising efforts have continued. The Lions Club’s bingo game at the community center tomorrow night (March 1) will provide proceeds to the library project. A dance is also scheduled for April 12, from 7-10 p.m., at the center. Horton’s from Humeston will be performing. Cost is $5 each.

Tax-deductible donations can also be mailed to Friends of the Melcher-Dallas Public Library, Inc., PO Box 774, Melcher-Dallas, IA, 50163. Please put “building fund” in the memo.
