Centerville pick for CA declines post

CENTERVILLE — The first candidate the Centerville City Council selected to be the city administrator, Joe Gaa, has decided to decline the job offer.

Gaa was selected by the council during a special meeting Monday, June 24 to be the city administrator.

During the meeting, Dick Schrad with Brimeyer Fursman, called Gaa who said he was looking forward to coming to Centerville.

The council during a special meeting Monday voted 5-0 to offer the city administrator position to their second choice, Patrick Antonen.

Antonen's employment agreement is nearly identical to the one the council offered to Gaa.

It calls for a salary of $75,000 per year starting Aug. 1. A performance evaluation will be done in December.

Antonen will receive $300 per month automobile expenses, a smart phone, paid travel expenses and paid dues and subscriptions.

If the council terminates Antonen's contract, he would be entitled to six months severance pay and benefits.

Antonen currently is the project officer for the state of Iowa, Homeland Security Emergency Management.

Temporary city clerk Joyce Davis, said Gaa decided to decline the job offer because the city he currently works for offered him more money.

In a related matter, the city has received and paid more than $784 in bills to find and hire a city administrator. The executive search firm, Brimeyer Fursman, is due $14,900 for their efforts to help Centerville find a city administrator.
