Severe weather likely Sunday

OTTUMWA — Southeast Iowa could be in for dangerous weather for Mother’s Day.

The Storm Prediction Center places most of the area in the moderate risk category, though that was up Saturday afternoon from a low risk earlier in the day.

The National Weather Service is forecasting “widespread severe storms,” with the potential for large hail and tornadoes.

Those tornadoes could be strong, long-track tornadoes, according to the Iowa Storm Chasing Network. The potential for more isolated supercells, rather than a line of storms, raises uncertainty while giving the cells the opportunity to grow without competition from neighboring storms.

Making the situation more dangerous is the fact fewer people pay close attention to the weather over the weekend and while celebrating with family members. While there is no need to alter plans for Mother’s Day (though outdoor events might want a backup option), people should pay close attention to the changing weather.
